If you are ordering plinths for a new boundary or replacing an older product, start with the current dimensions rather than an earlier brochure or photograph. Retain The Earth’s revised under-fence plinth is 2350 × 200 × 60 mm and weighs 65 kg.

Current under-fence plinth specification

The published specification lists a 2350 mm length, 200 mm height and 60 mm thickness. It describes reinforced 60 MPa concrete, 50 mm rebated ends, a bevelled exposed face and a square, trowel-finished rear. The listed finishes are Portland Grey and Blackwater Charcoal. Check the current 60 mm plinth technical data sheet and technical specifications page when planning an order.

The 60 mm figure is the thickness of the current plinth. The 200 mm figure is its product height. Neither figure alone determines the visible height after installation, which depends on the fence arrangement and site levels. Confirm how the rebated ends fit your posts or channels before committing to a quantity.

Choosing a finish

Portland Grey offers a lighter base below the fence. Blackwater Charcoal is the darker choice. Look at the plinth alongside the colour of the fence panels, posts, paving and nearby walls. A completed installation photo is useful for judging the overall effect; ask for a current product view if the exact surface appearance matters to your project.

A completed charcoal plinth and fence installation.

Measure the fence run before ordering

Record the length of each straight run, the number of bays and posts, gates, corners and any changes in ground level. Compare those measurements with the 2350 mm product length and the details of your fence system. The number of plinths is not simply the total fence length divided by 2350: post spacing, rebates, cuts and layout can change the order.

If the fence line retains soil, has a substantial level difference or needs an engineered detail, have the proposed arrangement checked for that site. Do not assume an under-fence plinth has the same role as a concrete sleeper designed for a retaining wall. Plan access and safe handling for the installed product with your contractor or supplier; confirm the actual unit mass with Retain The Earth before relying on a weight for transport or lifting.

Ask for a quote with the right details

Send the fence layout or measurements, the number of bays, chosen finish, post or channel details, delivery location and any project drawings. Retain The Earth can then discuss the current plinth and availability. For the wider product range and contact details, visit Retain The Earth.

Portland Grey or Blackwater Charcoal Concrete Sleepers? A Product Guide

Compare Retain The Earth's Portland Grey and Blackwater Charcoal concrete sleepers, current sizes and the details to confirm before ordering.

Choosing a concrete sleeper finish is a visible decision in a retaining wall. Retain The Earth offers Portland Grey and Blackwater Charcoal finishes in its current concrete sleeper range. This guide puts the two choices beside the dimensions you need to check before ordering.

The two finishes

Portland Grey gives a lighter concrete appearance. It can sit comfortably with pale paving, gravel and rendered surfaces. Blackwater Charcoal is the darker option and can make the wall a stronger visual element beside planting or dark fencing. Colour is a design choice; confirm the actual appearance with a current product photo or sample before ordering, especially if it must match another material.

A grey sleeper wall from Retain The Earth’s own photo library.

A charcoal sleeper wall from Retain The Earth’s own photo library.

Sizes in the current range

Both finishes are listed on the current technical specifications page. The concrete sleeper dimensions shown there are 2000 × 200 × 80 mm, 2000 × 200 × 100 mm, 2350 × 200 × 80 mm, 2350 × 200 × 100 mm, 2400 × 200 × 80 mm and 2400 × 200 × 100 mm. Dimensions are length × height × thickness. Retain The Earth lists reinforced 60 MPa concrete manufactured to AS 3600.

Choose the length and thickness from your wall design and the applicable engineering details, rather than selecting them by colour alone. Confirm the post spacing, required wall height, ground conditions, drainage and the design of any corners or steps with the person responsible for the installation. If your project needs engineering approval, use the project-specific requirements.

How to decide between grey and charcoal

Compare them at the site. Put the finish beside the fence, paving and other landscape materials that will remain. A close-up product image and a completed wall photo answer different questions: one shows surface detail; the other shows how a full run reads in context.

Check the quantity by length. Measure each straight run and note corners, changes in height and any openings. Give those measurements and the engineering specification to the supplier so the order can be checked against the chosen sleeper length and thickness.

Ask about the current batch. Concrete appearance can vary between photographs, lighting and production batches. Confirm finish and availability when requesting a quote. Do not assume that grey and charcoal have different structural ratings; the published technical page describes the sleeper range as 60 MPa reinforced concrete.

Get the current data before ordering

Why Choose a Local Concrete Sleeper Manufacturer in Adelaide

Retain The Earth manufactures concrete sleepers in Edinburgh North, South Australia, and has operated since 2009. Landscapers, fencing contractors, builders and homeowners can ask the local team about product specifications, availability, bulk orders and delivery options for their retaining wall project. Confirm lead times and site requirements when requesting a quote.

Under-fence plinths with a 60 mm main thickness and 50 mm end rebates. View the 60 mm technical data sheet.

Key TakeawayLocal manufacturing shortens lead times, reduces freight exposure and keeps accountability in the same market. For bulk orders, those three factors often matter more than a marginal difference in unit rate.

60 MPa Concrete Sleepers: Strength That Handles Adelaide Conditions

Retain The Earth manufactures 60 MPa reinforced concrete sleepers in Edinburgh North. The published technical data should be reviewed alongside an engineer’s design for the wall, including reinforcement, post spacing, loads, drainage and ground conditions. Ask the team for the current product documents before ordering.

Portland Plain Grey and Blackwater Smooth Charcoal Finishes

Finish is where structural product meets landscape design. Retain The Earth offers Portland plain grey and Blackwater smooth charcoal sleepers, both with a face-side bevel and square back for a clean, consistent line once installed. The bevel gives the wall a defined edge, while the square back sits flush against soil and drainage layers. Consistent dimensions mean courses stack predictably, reducing cutting, packing and adjustment on site.

Under-Fence Plinths: Current Size and Finish

Retain The Earth makes under-fence plinths in Edinburgh North for a durable base beneath Good Neighbour and boundary fencing. The current plinth is 2350 mm long, 200 mm high and 60 mm thick, with a centred 50 mm rebate at both ends. It uses 60 MPa reinforced concrete and is available in Portland Grey and Blackwater Charcoal. The exposed face is bevelled and the rear is square with a trowel finish. Confirm the fencing system, installation and safe handling requirements for your project.

Retaining Wall Engineering Standards and Council Approval in South Australia

Retaining walls are one of the few landscaping structures where the paperwork genuinely matters. Get the engineering and approvals sequence wrong and you can be pulling out a finished wall, but the process is predictable once you know what triggers it.

What Actually Triggers Engineering and Council Involvement

Engineering and approval requirements depend on the wall height, retained ground, loads, boundaries, drainage and site conditions. Before ordering materials, check the proposed design with a qualified engineer and your local council or approval authority. A product specification alone does not establish whether a retaining wall needs approval.

The wall height and amount of retained ground may affect design and approval requirements.

There is a surcharge load behind the wall, a driveway, a parked car, a shed slab or a building footing.

The wall sits on or near a boundary and the retained ground is higher than the neighbouring property.

The wall is part of a structure that itself needs approval, such as a carport or a fence over a certain height.

The site has reactive clay soils, a slope, or drainage that concentrates water behind the wall.

What AS 3600 Compliance Actually Means for Your Project

AS 3600 is the Australian Standard for concrete structures, setting out how reinforced concrete elements must be designed, detailed and constructed to perform safely under load. When a sleeper is manufactured to AS 3600, the concrete element has been produced against a recognised structural benchmark, not that the wall design is automatically compliant.

The Documentation Package Engineers and Certifiers Ask For

A retaining wall approval application usually needs some combination of the following. Having these ready before you lodge saves weeks:

A site plan showing the wall location, height and relationship to boundaries.

A structural design or certification from a qualified engineer, signed and dated.

Product documentation showing the sleeper’s concrete strength and standards compliance.

Drainage details, how water behind the wall is collected and discharged.

Details of any surcharge loads and how they are accounted for.

Watch OutOrdering sleepers before confirming council requirements is the most common and costly sequencing error on retaining wall projects. If the wall needs engineering certification and the design changes, materials already delivered may not suit the final specification. Confirm the approval pathway first, then order.

Where the Sleeper Manufacturer Fits In

A manufacturer’s job is to supply a product that meets the structural specification the engineer calls for, with documentation to prove it. Retain The Earth manufactures in Edinburgh North, SA, and can supply the product specifications and standards information your engineer or certifier needs. For projects where the design is still being worked through, it is worth contacting Retain The Earth early so the sleeper specification and the wall design are aligned from the start rather than reconciled afterwards.

Bulk Concrete Sleeper Orders: Trade Supply and Delivery Across Adelaide

For trade and bulk concrete sleeper orders in Adelaide, ask Retain The Earth to confirm quantities, current stock or production timing, delivery availability and site access. Contractor semi delivery with a Manitou for unloading may be arranged for suitable sites, subject to scheduling and access. Confirm the offload point and any equipment needs before placing the order.

How to Compare Concrete Sleeper Manufacturers Before You Buy

Many buyers compare on one number, the rate per sleeper, and that is a number that may not fully predict what the project actually costs. The real differences between manufacturers show up in four places: the concrete itself, dimensional consistency, how the product is delivered, and whether you are buying from the people who made it.

1. The Concrete Mix and Reinforcement

Two sleepers can look identical on a pallet and behave completely differently in the ground. What separates them is mix design, reinforcement and curing regime.

Get a Quote →

Compressive strength. Ask for the MPa rating. Retain The Earth manufactures its sleepers using 60 MPa reinforced concrete. A higher-strength mix resists cracking and flexing better under load and in reactive soils.

Reinforcement. Ask what steel is in the sleeper and how it is positioned. Reinforcement detailing governs how the element behaves under bending, the exact load a retaining wall applies.

Curing. Ask how the sleepers are cured. Controlled curing is what allows the concrete to reach its design strength rather than just its surface hardness.

2. Dimensional Consistency and Finish

This is the difference between a wall that goes up quickly and one that fights you all day. Sleepers that vary in length, thickness or squareness force the installer to pack, cut and adjust every course, and the labour cost of that rework usually exceeds any saving on the unit rate.

Check for:

Consistent dimensions across the batch, not just the sample.

A face-side bevel and square back, which give a clean finished line and let the sleeper sit flush against soil and drainage layers.

Uniform finish across the run. Retain The Earth offers Portland plain grey and Blackwater smooth charcoal sleepers, both manufactured to consistent dimensions so courses stack predictably.

3. Delivery Capability for Bulk Orders

A sleeper is heavy and bulky, and how it arrives on site is a real part of the project cost. Ask specifically:

How is a bulk order delivered? For Adelaide orders, ask whether contractor semi delivery with Manitou unloading is available for the quantity, destination and site access. Confirm the arrangement and cost in your quote.

What access does the site need? A semi with a Manitou needs room to manoeuvre and a safe offload point. Confirm this before delivery day.

What about regional projects? Ask whether delivery to your location can be arranged and confirm freight cost and lead time before ordering.

4. Direct From the Manufacturer vs Reseller

This is a check many buyers skip, and it can be an important one. When you buy direct from the manufacturer:

The specification you are quoted is the specification that gets poured.

Lead times are set by the people doing the work, not by a third party’s stock position.

Technical questions go to someone who understands the mix, the mould and the curing process.

Trade and bulk orders can be scheduled around your programme rather than a reseller’s.

A Practical Comparison Checklist

Work through this before committing to a bulk order:

Concrete strength: Confirm the MPa rating and that it suits your wall height and loading.

Standards compliance: Ask which Australian Standard the product is manufactured to, and request the documentation.

Reinforcement and curing: Ask for specifics, not assurances.

Finish consistency: Check that dimensions and finishes are uniform across the batch.

Delivery capability: Confirm how bulk orders are delivered and unloaded on your site.

Trade terms: Ask about bulk orders, lead times and support for repeat trade customers.

Direct supply: Confirm whether you are buying from the manufacturer or a reseller.

Pro TipAsk for a sample sleeper or visit the manufacturing yard before a large order. Seeing the finish, the bevel and the dimensional consistency in person tells you more about installation speed than any specification sheet.

The 2350 × 200 × 60 mm plinth weighs 65 kg. Use suitable help or equipment for handling and installation. Because we manufacture rather than resell, we ensure a straight and consistent profile.

Colorbond Fence Plinths and Boundary Fencing Applications

Colorbond fence plinths are our most common request. A plinth lifts the bottom rail clear of the ground, so the fence sheet isn’t sitting in damp soil where it would corrode or stain.

The same plinth suits boundary fencing and Good Neighbour fencing, where a clean, low gap looks deliberate rather than unfinished. Landscapers also use them to step a fence line across small changes in ground level, so panels stay level while the ground falls away.

Heavy Duty Fence Plinths: Specs, Stacking and Site Fit

Heavy duty fence plinths from Retain The Earth are cast at 60 MPa, providing them with high strength. The 2350 mm length and 200 mm width are standard dimensions, and the 60 mm depth provides a low profile.

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px"><col style="min-width: 25px"></colgroup>

Attribute

Specification

Length

2350 mm

Height

200 mm

Depth

60 mm

Rebate

Centred 50 mm at both ends

Concrete strength

60 MPa

Finish

Clean precast

Colours

Standard grey, charcoal

Maximum stacked height

Up to 400 mm

Watch Out“Installation method and suitability should be confirmed for the fencing system, site conditions and project requirements.”

“Why Use a Concrete Plinth Under a Fence?”

A concrete plinth provides support along the base, retains soil behind the line and helps close the sub-fence gap. Retain The Earth casts every plinth to the same profile, ensuring a consistent finish.

Key TakeawayA plinth does three jobs at once: it lifts the fence clear of the ground, it closes the gap underneath, and it gives the base a defined edge. That combination is what makes the fence line look finished.

Site Preparation: Getting the Base Right Before You Lay Plinths

Proper site preparation is crucial. The ground under the plinth needs to be level, compacted and free of soft spots for optimal installation.

Matching the Job to the Crew

For longer runs, commercial sites or anything involving a boundary, a fencing contractor or landscaper will usually get a better result faster, with the compaction gear and experience to keep the line straight.

Pro TipOrder the full run at once rather than topping up mid-job. Plinths from a single batch share the same finish and colour, which matters most on charcoal where a mismatched batch is easy to spot in daylight.

Long-Term Durability and Environmental Benefits

Precast concrete holds up well in the local climate. It doesn’t rot, rust, or need painting or sealing, and the 60 MPa mix provides density for durability over a long service life.

Choosing the Right Plinth for Your Project

Standard grey suits most Colorbond and boundary fencing, reading as a neutral base line. Charcoal is the pick when you want the plinth to merge with a dark fence sheet or charcoal Colorbond panel for a cleaner, more continuous look from the street.

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px"><col style="min-width: 25px"><col style="min-width: 25px"></colgroup>

Project type

Recommended colour

Why

Colorbond fencing, light colours

Standard grey

Neutral base, blends with pale sheets

Colorbond fencing, dark colours

Charcoal

Merges with the fence line

Boundary and Good Neighbour fencing

Standard grey or charcoal

Tidy, deliberate base line

Landscape projects and edging

Standard grey

Reads as a clean garden edge

Ordering, Delivery and Trade Enquiries

Retain The Earth is a South Australian manufacturer, not a reseller, so your plinths come straight from the yard at Edinburgh North. Soil conditions, including reactive clay or fill, affect the design.

Marking Post Positions and String Line Setup

Set your string line before you dig a single hole, this prevents the most common DIY error: posts drifting out of alignment.

Mark post centres to suit the actual sleeper length, steel profile and project design, allowing the specified clearance for the system

Run a taut string line along the wall face

Check square using the 3-4-5 triangle method

Mark each hole with spray paint

How Deep to Bury Retaining Wall Posts

Follow the site-specific engineering drawings for post embedment, footing size, steel section and construction details whenever a design is provided. There is no single depth that suits every retaining wall.

Where a site-specific engineered depth has not been provided, Retain The Earth’s preliminary planning guide is to allow post embedment below the lower finished ground level equal to the exposed wall height plus 200 mm. For example, a wall 1,000 mm above the lower ground level would be estimated with 1,200 mm of post embedment. This helps with initial planning; it does not establish that the wall is safe to build without engineering or approval.

When You Need Council Approval and an Engineer

Requirements depend on the site and the wall’s relationship to boundaries, fences, slopes and nearby structures. Before work begins, use PlanSA’s approval checker and ask a qualified designer or engineer when the site conditions call for one. An apparently low wall can still carry substantial loads.

Soil Classification Drives Embedment Depth

Ground conditions affect the footing design and the depth needed to support the posts. Reactive clay, fill, soft ground and changing moisture conditions can alter the design. Do not treat the preliminary height-plus-200-mm estimate as a substitute for site assessment.

Surcharge Loads Change Everything

Driveways, buildings, fences, sloping ground and stored materials near the top of a wall may add loads. The engineer’s design must account for the actual conditions behind and around the wall.

Concrete Footing Depth and Steel Post Embedment

Post embedment, hole diameter, concrete footing, post section and drainage work together. Use the specified design for the site; confirm those details before ordering steel or starting excavation.

Installing Steel Posts and Pouring Concrete Footings

Steel posts carry the load, get them plumb and the rest falls into place.

Mixing and Pouring Concrete for Post Footings

Use the concrete grade, pier dimensions, steel placement and cover specified by the engineer or applicable system design. Set the galvanised posts plumb and at the required centres, brace them securely, then pour and finish the footings as specified. Keep the concrete below the seating level of the bottom sleeper where the design requires it, and allow the specified curing time before inserting sleepers or backfilling.

See our galvanised retaining steel →

Levelling and Alignment Techniques

Check plumb on two faces of every post, one that looks straight from the front can lean sideways.

Use a spirit level on the face and the side

Re-check against the string line after each pour

Adjust braces before the concrete sets

Record any post out of vertical tolerance and fix it immediately

Stacking Sleepers and Securing the Wall

Once the footings have reached the specified cure, plan the lift for the actual sleeper weight, access and equipment. Check the product information before handling.

Installing the First Sleeper and Building Up

The first sleeper sets the level for the whole wall. Slide it into the steel posts, check it sits level, then lock it in place. Use spacers to keep gaps even, and work upward one course at a time, checking horizontal alignment as you go.

<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Step

What to Check

Common Error

First sleeper

Level and seated in posts

Forcing it, cracking the edge

Middle courses

Even spacer gaps

Uneven spacing, crooked look

Safe Handling and Lifting of Concrete Sleepers

Concrete sleepers are heavy and can crush fingers or feet. Plan the lift for the product weight and use rated mechanical aids and competent operators where needed. Keep hands clear of the steel channels as each sleeper is lowered. Follow the applicable work health and safety procedures and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Spacers, Alignment and Course Control

Spacers keep gaps even and stop sleepers shifting. Use consistent spacer thickness across the whole wall, mixed sizes create a crooked look no capping will hide.

Concrete Sleeper Retaining Wall Drainage Requirements

Drainage is where most retaining walls fail: water builds up behind the wall, adds soil pressure and pushes the structure forward.

Your browser does not support video playback.
Watch: why drainage matters behind a concrete sleeper wall.

For the illustrated build sequence, drainage diagram and maintenance advice, see our Installation & Care Guide.

Drain, Backfill and Outlet

Provide a continuous drainage path behind the wall using the membrane or separation layer, drain and free-draining material specified for the design. The drain needs a suitable outlet so collected water can leave the wall. The size and extent of the drainage zone, backfill material and compaction limits depend on the project details; do not assume a fixed 300 mm gravel height is adequate.

Protect the drain from blockage during backfilling, and avoid heavy equipment or surcharge loads near the wall unless the design allows them. Record the drainage route and outlet before covering the work.

Maintaining Concrete Landscape Products in Coastal Areas

Coastal sites punish concrete harder than inland ones. Salt spray, wind-driven sand and constant moisture all speed up wear.

Troubleshooting Common Installation Errors

Movement, cracking, blocked outlets and misaligned posts call for assessment before adding load or attempting a repair. The visible symptom alone does not identify the cause. Ask a suitably qualified installer or engineer to inspect the wall and its drainage, footing and backfill details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Need concrete sleepers and retaining steel for your project?

Contact Retain The Earth for product pricing, trade pricing and delivery throughout Adelaide and South Australia.
